Destinations on offer in this tropical region are varied and diverse, ranging from the very popular French-speaking Melanesian nations of New Caledonia and Vanuatu to the more far-flung Samoa, Cook Islands and even Tahiti.
For the vast majority of people, tropical holidays come right at the top of the list of best getaways, and the South Pacific can certainly deliver in this regard with a plethora of white sand, palm trees and balmy breezes. A cruise into the South Pacific is an escape from reality!
Pacific Islands cruise paradise
New Caledonia and Vanuatu are the most popular South Pacific cruise destinations for cruises from Australia, thanks in large part to their proximity. It’s just two sea days from Sydney or Brisbane to these beautiful Pacific nations, which offer both the French-influenced urban delights of Noumea and Port Vila and ports of the more untouched variety such as the Isle of Pines, Mystery Island and Champagne Bay.
A slightly longer South Pacific cruise can take you to yet more gorgeous tropical isles. In Fiji, ships visit Suva, Port Denarau and Dravuni Island regularly, and if you’d rather fly there to begin your holiday, Captain Cook Fiji offer in-depth cruises around the country’s small offshore islands in their boutique vessel. Further afield are yet more wonderful South Pacific destinations: Tonga, Samoa, the Cook Islands and the exotic French Polynesia, often known as Tahiti. One-way repositioning voyages often stop in at Tahiti on their way north or south for the respective summers, and are a great way to see more of the region.
South Pacific cruise lines
The islands are such a favourite amongst Australian cruisers that you’d be hard-pressed to find a cruise line which doesn’t include them in their programs. All of the major lines with Australia-based ships sail there: P&O Cruises, Princess, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and more. The options are numerous, and the ships which stay in Australia over winter offer cruises to the South Pacific islands year-round, so you’ll find something to fit any budget or schedule.
Smaller luxury lines sail there too, although less frequently. As mentioned above, Captain Cook Fiji offers in-depth boutique cruises around the smaller Fiji Isles, while Paul Gauguin Cruises does the same for the gorgeous islands around Tahiti - including the famous Bora Bora! These are perfect for the more intrepid cruiser who wants to be immersed in the natural assets and culture of the islands.
