Located in the middle of a spreading archipelago, Stockholm is varied and yet cohesive. It spreads across fourteen islands and is connected by 57 bridges, a meandering place that encourages visitors to slow down and enjoy the many urban delights. The characteristic Nordic low-key coolness is evident here, as is the eco-friendliness so common in the region. It's also nice to look at - quite the package, this capital of Sweden.
The Baltic Sea is inextricably intertwined with life in Stockholm - it flows around islands and through channels, right into the heart of the city. What better way to say farewell than from the deck of a ship? Cruising from Stockholm is a great way to discover the Baltic and the intriguing countries which surround it.
Stockholm cruise lines and destinations
You can experience the beautiful Royal Caribbean cruise line style of holiday with a cruise departing from Stockholm. The line cruises from there during the summer season.
The primary destination for Stockholm cruise departures is the Baltic Sea, and it's a great place for an ocean voyage, with a variety of wonderful port cities around the coast. Common stopovers include Helsinki in Finland, St Petersburg in Russia, Tallinn in Estonia and Riga in Latvia. Extended itineraries might include ports in Denmark and Germany too.
There are several places a cruise ship might dock in Stockholm: Frihamnen, or in one of the smaller docks near the Old Town such as Stadsgarden. Cruise ships taking on passengers are likely to be docked at the former.
Frihamnen (Freeport) is a 15-minute drive from the central city, on the eastern fringes of Stockholm. Buses number 1 and 76 travel between there and Gamla Stan downtown. To get there from the airport, it's probably easiest to take the train to the central station and then a cab.
The cruise terminal building at Frihamnen is relatively new and modern. It offers WiFi, tourist information services and food for purchase.
