Cruise lines for an NZ adventure

With so much to see just across the ditch, it's no wonder that many cruise lines are jumping on the New Zealand cruise bandwagon. You can get there aboard almost all of the lines which frequent South Pacific waters, especially between November and March which are the warmer months. Princess Cruises dedicate a lot of time to round trips around the country, as well as the more old-fashioned but equally elegant Holland America line. Other ships commonly spotted in New Zealand waters include those in the P&O Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess Cruises and Carnival fleets. Luxury lines such as Azamara and Seabourn also make an appearance in the country's ports.

New Zealand itineraries

Passengers bound for New Zealand can begin their journeys in any of the major cities in the East of Australia - cruises to New Zealand from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne are all available, as well as itineraries departing Auckland. Some NZ cruises are round trips, others one-way, but most travel down the eastern coast of the country which boasts many of the port cities.

Spectacular destinations

New Zealand's cruise ports are varied and exciting, making a cruise around New Zealand one to remember, but finding a cruise that suits a trickier process! Here is a list of the wonderful places you might visit:

  • The Bay of Islands, north of Auckland, is a wonderland of pretty isles, bays and beaches. Expect some sun and sand if your cruise stops here!
  • Tauranga is a laid-back and beachy city south of Auckland, close by the tourist centre of Rotorua. A highlight is the Mount Maunganui neighbourhood, Tauranga's answer to Surfer's Paradise.
  • Napier, located in the beautiful Hawke's Bay region, is a gateway to some fabulous wineries in the pretty surrounding countryside. The city itself has some fabulous Art Deco architecture.
  • Wellington is the nation's capital and a hotspot of culture and arts. Te Papa, the national museum, is a great place to start when your ship docks in the beautiful harbour surrounded by hills.
  • Picton features on some New Zealand cruise itineraries, and it's worth the detour despite being tucked away in the Marlborough Sounds. The charms of the lovely little town are exceeded only by the amazing views on the way in.
  • Christchurch, the Garden City, has largely been replaced by Akaroa as a port, but ships will start calling in there soon. Both Canterbury destinations make a great stop on any itinerary.
  • Dunedin is a Scottish-influenced student city in the deep south. From there you can visit the amazing wildlife found on the Otago peninsula.
  • Fiordland is the gem in the crown of any New Zealand cruise. Most ships do not stop here but spend some time cruising through the amazing inlets so passengers can take in the cliffs, snow-covered peaks, waterfalls and calm waters of Dusky, Doubtful and Milford Sounds.
