The Tamil culture dominates the region, but the city is a melting pot of residents and visitors from all over the country and the world. History and modernity both have their appeals in Chennai, remembered by some as the colonial Madras.

The long coastline of sandy beaches is a jewel in the city's crown - at 12 kilometres long, Marina Beach has space for everybody. The temples, churches and mosques of Chennai are a spiritual experience not to be missed, particularly the stunning Kapaleeswarar Temple which is said to date to the 8th century. Foodies will delight in the Tamil cuisine and the wide range of vegetarian delicacies on offer, while others might enjoy the strong music and dance scenes.
