Rotterdam Overview

Launched in 1997, the MS Rotterdam cruise ship is the latest in a long lineage of Holland America flagships. The Rotterdam pays tribute to its heritage with class and style while still offering all the modern amenities you'd expect from the cruise ships of today.

Specs: Rotterdam at a glance
The Rotterdam weighs 61,849 tonnes and comes to 780 feet in length. She can carry up to 1404 passengers and has a maximum speed of 25 knots.

Accommodation: Rotterdam rooms and suites
Holland America ships are well known for their generously sized accommodation, and the staterooms of the Rotterdam are no exception. Starting from the Interior staterooms at 182 square feet and scaling all the way up to the deluxe Pinnacle Suite (1127 square feet), rooms aboard the Rotterdam are without exception elegant affairs. Even the most affordable options come complete with a flat screen TV and luxurious beds featuring Sealy® Premium Euro-Top mattresses.

Entertainment: things to do on board the Rotterdam
Whether you're living large at the onboard casino or taking in live stage shows, the Rotterdam has a stunning array of entertainment to choose from, both night and day.
Highlights include:
  • Dancing With the Stars: At Sea - brush up with free dance lessons before competing for the honour of Cruise Champion, or just sit back and watch the show
  • B.B. King's Blues Club
  • The Retreat: a private resort-style poolside experience
  • Huge LED cinema screen on deck for outdoor movies

Food: Rotterdam restaurants
Holland America invites Rotterdam cruisers to dine "As You Wish", whether that means set dining times or a more spontaneous style.

Some dining options included in your Rotterdam ticket:
  • La Fontaine Dining Room: classic, sophisticated cuisine
  • Lido Restaurant: relaxed atmosphere, delicious food
  • Dive-In at Terrace Grill: tasty burgers and hotdogs
  • Slice Pizza: gourmet pizza served poolside

Some specialty dining options (for a nominal fee):
  • The Pinnacle Grill: refined and romantic American-style dining
  • Le Cirque Restaurant: whimsical, experiential dining
  • Tamarind Restaurant: savour the flavours of Southeast Asia, China and Japan
  • Canaletto Restaurant: authentic Italian, perfect for sharing with friends and family

Destinations: Rotterdam itineraries
While many of the Rotterdam's voyages are centred around Europe, there are quite a number that range further afield, with itineraries taking in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and India among many other destinations. There's even a Rotterdam itinerary that ventures north for a "'oyage of the Vikings Cruise' encompassing Ireland, Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Canada!

Things to remember: On board the Rotterdam
Just a few things to remember when preparing for a vacation aboard the Rotterdam:
  • Week-long cruises include usually include two formal nights - pack your tux or ballgown as black tie dress code is expected.
  • Club HAL caters to a couple age brackets between 5 and 17, though the extent of kids activities will depend on the time of year and itinerary.
  • The US dollar is standard currency on the Rotterdam, and daily gratuities (which you can adjust) are automatically added to your account.

I have enjoyed visiting as much of the world as possible over the years. Europe and the Mediterranean are personal favourites, but there is so much to see very close to our little Australasian corner of the globe- one of my top travel experiences was snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles in New Caledonia! Cruising is a fantastic way to see it all, and we hope to make booking a cruise easier for both first-timers and old salts. From ship tips to destination news and views, we will keep you up-to-date. Happy cruising!
