Aussie cruisers, here are your options

We're not passing any judgement on the conduct of Saint Patrick in particular or Irish people in general, but it's hard to deny that the green-tinged St Pat's Day has become synonymous with drinking - especially in Australia! Those at sea are well-placed to celebrate, with so many different venues for revelry from casual poolside cocktails to a night out in the bars. We took a look at the beverage packages available on Australia cruise ships, so you can make the most of this Emerald Isle-themed occasion.

P&O drinks packages
P&O Cruises' packages are a recent and welcome addition to the line. Previously, only the soft drink package at $7 per person per day was available - and this is still good value for kids, teens and teetotallers! There is also a bottled water package available which provides 6 large bottles of water delivered to your room for $15, a one-off.

The Premium Beverage Package is the main event! At $79 per person per day, it's quite an investment - and only available on cruises of 7 nights or more. However, should you choose one, you will add a lot of enjoyment and indulgence to your cruise. The package covers soft drinks, bottled water, coffee, beer, wine, cocktails and select spirits - just about anything you could need to celebrate St Pats, or any other evening onboard.

Royal Caribbean drinks packages
Royal Caribbean is all about a good time and plenty of entertainment - and they have been offering beverage packages in Australia for many years. They have it down to a fine art, and offer three different alcoholic packages along with the "Royal Replenish" which includes premium coffee, tea, bottled water, fresh-squeezed juice, soda and mocktails at US$20 per person per day.

For those who aren't big drinkers, Royal Caribbean offers a Select Package which includes beer, wines by the glass, soda and mocktails at US$40 per person per day. The Premium Package is priced at US$55 per person per day and gives the bearer access to premium and frozen cocktails, beer, wines by the glass, soda, mocktails and bottled water. If you want virtually unlimited options for your onboard drinking, there's the Ultimate Package which covers all those beverages previously mentioned - frozen and premium cocktails, beer, wine by the glass, mocktails, bottled water, soda, premium coffee, tea and juice at US$65 per person per day.

Princess Cruises drinks packages
The packages available onboard Princess Cruises' Australia-based ships are a little different than on their US-based counterparts, but you can still enjoy unlimited beverages. Non-alcoholic options are the same across the board, priced at US$8.05 per person per day for unlimited soda, mocktails, juice and hot chocolate, or $33.35 per coffee card which will get you 15 espresso-based specialty coffees.

The All-Inclusive Beverage Package on Aussie Princess cruises costs AU$59 per person per day, and is only available on voyages of 8 nights or longer. It covers all individual beverages of up to $14 value, from coffees to cocktails, and excludes mini-bar items and vending machine items.

Celebrity Cruises drinks packages
There are plenty of options for Celebrity cruisers who want to add a drinks packages to their cruise.  We are listing the individual prices for drinks packages here, but the best way to get the classic beverage package is to take advantage of their "Go Big, Better, Best" permanent promotion which allows you to add it as a perk for reduced fares. Soda packages and premium water packages are available for around AU$13 and AU$23 per person per night respectively.

The Standard Package allows you to indulge in select beers, wines, spirits, cocktails, liquors and frozen drinks which cost up to $6 each at AU$64 per person, per night. The Classic Package covers beers up to $6 each, spirits and cocktails up to $8 each and wine up to $9 per glass, and costs AU$78 per person per night. The Premium Package allows the lucky  holder access to fine craft beers, top-shelf spirits, wines and cocktails up to $13 each in value, and costs AU$92 per person per night.

Holland America Line drinks packages
Passengers on Holland America ships can enhance their cruise experience with beverage packages. Along with their main package, they offer multi-day wine packages and an array of beverage cards for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

The Signature Beverage Package is priced somewhere around US$50 per person, per day, and includes drinks up to the value of $7 each.

Carnival Cruise Lines drinks packages
St Pat's day partiers are a little out of luck  when cruising on Carnival - the line doesn't offer any alcoholic beverage packages on their Australia-based ships. However, drinks are of course available for individual purchase in bars throughout. You can also opt for the "Bottomless Bubbles" soda package at US$6 per day for an adult and US$4.50 per day for a child.

We wish all the luck of the Irish to all those cruising this St Patty's Day! Take a look at our cheap cruises on offer and you too could be sailing away to celebrate.

I have enjoyed visiting as much of the world as possible over the years. Europe and the Mediterranean are personal favourites, but there is so much to see very close to our little Australasian corner of the globe- one of my top travel experiences was snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles in New Caledonia! Cruising is a fantastic way to see it all, and we hope to make booking a cruise easier for both first-timers and old salts. From ship tips to destination news and views, we will keep you up-to-date. Happy cruising!
