Did you know Holland America’s, Maasdam was named after the Maas River, a major European river in the Netherlands (no we’re not talking about the cheese called Maasdam). That’s just one of the many interesting facts you might not have known about Maasdam.

Wine onboard Maasdam.

  1. Her maiden voyage was in December 1993 and was christened by Hollywood icon June Allyson.  Her last dry dock was in September 2018. She has two sister ships named Statendam (previously known as P&O Pacific Eden) and Ryndam (now with P&O known as Pacific Aria). 

  2. Maasdam is the only Holland America ship to be dedicated to In-Depth Exploration Central (EXC) voyages.  These voyages are designed to fully embrace the destinations of each cruise, which allows guests to fully immerse themselves into the cruise and the destinations they will be visiting.

  3. It is the only ship in Holland America’s fleet to be fitted with Inflatable Zodiacs.  The Zodiacs allow you to access remote destinations that you cannot reach any other way.  Guests have the opportunity to explore nature, history and culture with their very own destination experts.

  4. Maasdam is the traveler’s classroom at sea.  Destination experts onboard educate guests through interesting lectures, workshops, cultural performances by local entertainers and host the most forgettable shore excursions that show you what you have learnt at your destination.  

  5. There are six themes that Maasdam experts focus and educate guests including photography, food, wine and spirits, active explorations, nature and science, history,perspective and arts and culture. 

  6. Holland America celebrates the traditional style of cruising.  The interior and public areas of Maasdam are very elegant. The ship has lots of beautiful artwork which complements the classic theme of cruising.  Maasdam has an onboard art gallery that features an extensive range of artwork. The atrium on Level 6 features a large green glass piece of artwork named the “Totem” and extends  up three decks.

  7. Maasdam carries 1,258 guests and is a medium sized ship.  There is 1 crew member for every 3 guests onboard. The currency onboard the ship is in USD and gratuities are charged to your stateroom account daily.

  8. There are 14 decks on Maasdam.  The main pool is called the ‘Lido Pool’ and is located on Deck 11.  If the weather is bad outside, there is a retractable roof – so you can still enjoy the luxury of the pool!

  9. To celebrate the destinations you are visiting on your cruise, Maasdam offers cooking demonstrations and special fine dining events lead by guest chefs. On the Indepth Exploration cruises, each voyage features an onboard guest chef on who will introduce unique culinary traditions.  There will be cooking demonstrations, tastings and special dinners. You can also participate in culinary tours ashore and immerse yourself in local flavors and customs. 

  10. There are many dining venues onboard Maasdam. These include:

  • The Dining Room – An elegant two-tiered dining room where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or a multi course dinner prepared by renowned chefs.

  • Lido – Explore the many options available at this modern marketplace that includes a selection of delicious options.
  • Dive-In – Enjoy freshly grilled burgers served on toasted brioche with their own secret sauce, or you can treat yourself to gourmet hot dogs with golden Frenh fries, all included.
  • Tea Time – In the afternoon’s you can expect to be served afternoon tea at an appropriate time – suitable for the novice tea drinker right through to the connoisseur.
  • Pinnacle Grill ($)– The Steakhouse onboard offers an intimate dining experience. Enjoy a range of dishes that are made from premium ingredients from King Salmon to sustainably sourced  Beef.
  • Carnaletto ($) – This wonderful Italian restaurant features an inspiring menu offering Italian Classics such as braised chicken Cacciatore al forno, garlic shrimp ravioli and delightful desserts such as Tiramisu or Cannoli alla Sicilana. 
  • Explorations Cafe ($) - Relax in their comfortable coffee house (presented by The New York Times) where you can enjoy fresh pastries and your favorite espresso.
