Los Angeles Cruises: City of Angels

Home of Hollywood, movie stars and entertainment, Los Angeles is an exhilarating place to visit. The city sprawls along the coast and inland, surrounded by mountain ranges, valleys, forests and deserts. As a port stop, it can offer beach relaxation, urban fun, shopping, star-spotting, people-watching and even Disneyland!

The Port: Docking in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a huge port hub for the west coast of the United States. The World Cruise Centre has three berths serving cruise ships. It was recently expanded to be able to handle the biggest megaships. The Centre is found in San Pedro, close to Long Beach and around a half hours' drive from central Los Angeles.

Another Los Angeles cruise facility is the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, near the Queen Mary which is in permanent dock at Long Beach. This terminal is used primarily for Carnival ships docking in Los Angeles. It is not far from the World Cruise Centre, and approximately the same distance from the city centre.

The City: Celebrity Central

  • This is not a compact city! Los Angeles as a whole is well spread out, but there are highlights clustered in the walkable Downtown area. The Grand Central Market is amongst these, an iconic L.A. eating and produce shopping experience. Also in Downtown are the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Disney Concert Hall, Chinatown and Little Tokyo. Architecture is a feature of Downtown Los Angeles, with some wonderful buildings such as the Bradbury Building, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and Library Tower.

  • Likely the most famous district of Los Angeles is Hollywood! It is the entertainment capital of the world, famous for the iconic "Hollywood' sign on the hill. The best of Hollywood can be seen on its three boulevards: Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood Boulevard and Melrose Avenue. Hollywood Boulevard tells the story of the entertainment industry, Sunset Boulevard is home to clubs and nightlife, and Melrose Avenue is best known for its shopping and eclectic character. On Hollywood Boulevard, Grauman's Chinese Theatre hosts the footprints and handprints of the most famous movie stars. Nearby is the Wax Museum and the Walk of Fame, a series of commemorative stars set in the sidewalk representing the best of the entertainment industry.

  • Los Angeles has plenty of other neighbourhoods to explore- the funky Eastside, gritty South Central, the San Fernando Valley, and the outlying city-suburbs. These include Santa Monica and its famous boardwalk, Pasadena, Anaheim the home of Disneyland, and affluent Beverly Hills. On the coast, visitors can enjoy the sun, sand and surf at beaches stretching from Santa Monica Beach in the north to Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach in the south. Venice Beach is well-known as a hangout for the artistic community, and it is great for people-watching, as eccentric locals, sports courts, rollerskaters and street performers parade the length of the boardwalk.

Cruise to and from Los Angeles: Cruise Holidays

Los Angeles is one of the major cruise hubs on North America's Pacific coast, so there are plenty of options when it comes to cruises departing Los Angeles. Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and Crystal all have itineraries leaving Los Angeles, with a variety of destinations. Cruises to Hawaii are very common, as are those heading south to Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Puntarenas and beyond. Transpacific cruises from Los Angeles head to Hawaii, Tahiti and the South Pacific Islands. Cruises from Los Angeles can also head north to San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver.

Los Angeles is also used as a cruise destination, with ships calling in for the day whilst cruising North America's west coast. Almost any cruise line can be spotted calling in, during World Cruises or short jaunts down the coast from Seattle to Mexico. A popular Princess itinerary is one that disembarks in Los Angeles, beginning in Fort Lauderdale and sailing through the Caribbean and the Panama Canal.
