Eastern Caribbean Cruising: Island Paradises

Eastern Caribbean Cruising: Island Paradises

The Eastern Caribbean is home to some amazing cruise ports! The island nations which border the Caribbean to the east have some beautiful beaches, charming towns and wonderful vistas- get amongst it!

The Ports: Caribbean Cruise Stopovers

The Eastern Caribbean is comprised mostly of island nations. Amongst these, there are a myriad of places for ships to call in- here are some of the most popular ones.

  • Saint Thomas is on Charlotte Amalie in the US Virgin Islands and is one of the most heavily trafficked ports for cruise ships. The town and island offer up endless delights, from duty-free shopping to the beautiful Magens Bay and a lovely historic district. Saint Thomas will be found on almost all Eastern Caribbean itineraries. Ships dock at Havensight Pier or Crown Pier, which can collectively handle up to six ships.

  • Basseterre is the capital of St Kitts and Nevis and one of the oldest towns in the region. The island of St Kitts is lush and green, popular with eco-tourism and not too spoilt by development. The capital is colourful and fun, with cruise ships docking at Port Zante which has been developed to handle the mammoth vessels.

  • St. Lucia is a simply stunning island, as those who have cruised to it will know. Home to verdant greenery and dramatic mountain peaks, the island is a truly beautiful tropical paradise. The locals are committed to protecting the islands rainforests, and a lot of the activities and tours available involve these or water sports in the surrounding clear waters. Ships dock at Place Carenage or Pointe Seraphine, both close to the centre of Castries, the island's capital.

  • Philipsburg in St Maarten is a bustling place, lined with bright white beaches. These can be found all over the island too, so there is no shortage of sunbathing and swimming opportunities. Duty Free deals on electronics and alcohol are another highlight of St Maarten, and the French nation of St Martin is not far from the port, so cruisers can experience both. Philipsburg has a pier and cruise terminal for ships, which is less than a mile from the downtown.

  • Barbados is a port of call for many cruises, and also used as a departure point by some lines. The country is friendly, safe and laidback. Whilst the western and southern coasts are heavily developed, the eastern coast is wild, with the Atlantic Ocean pounding on rugged shore. Ships dock at Bridgetown Cruise Terminal, in the capital city. It is not far from downtown Bridgetown.

The Cruises: Royal Caribbean, Princess and More

The Caribbean is a stomping ground for most major cruise lines! Nearly any line will offer itineraries in the area, with Royal Caribbean, Princess and the other North American lines being the most commonly spotted. From luxury cruises to megaship cruises and anything in between, it is available in the Eastern Caribbean. Carnival and Celebrity ships are also common, along with luxury lines such as Seabourn visiting the smaller ports.

Most cruises to the Eastern Caribbean are a round trip from one of the major cruise ports in Florida- Fort Lauderdale or Miami, or occasionally New York. Barbados is also used as a departure point for cruises in the region.
