Australia is both a cruise destination and a base for cruise ships in the South Pacific! The market for cruises Down Under has increased markedly in recent years, and now both locals and northerners alike enjoy exploring the country and its surrounds from a watery perspective. Cruising Australia offers plenty of options, from balmy northern Queensland to wild and remote Tasmania.

Cruises from Australia: Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Fremantle

There are 4 main disembarkation ports in Australia, from which the main cruise lines take on passengers:

  • Sydney is by far the largest and busiest, with ships from P&O Australia, Carnival, Princess and Royal Caribbean based there during the season. With two dedicated cruise terminals, it plays host to a huge numbers of ships, some staying for a port visit and some discharging and taking on passengers.

  • Brisbane and Melbourne also serve as cruise hubs on the eastern coast.

  • Fremantle, a city-suburb of Perth, is the cruise port for the west coast. Cruises to Southeast Asia often depart from there, and also cruises around the top end or bottom end of Australia to the other side of the country.

Australia also has plenty of ports where cruise ships can call in for a day of exploration. The aforementioned cruise hubs are also used as port stops on many cruises, discharging passengers to see the sights before moving on. Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth are world-class cities which can inject a bit of urban excitement into any cruise!

  • Some more naturally scenic destinations can be found in Northern Queensland- common ports of call include Cairns, Port Douglas and Airlie Beach in the beautiful Whitsundays Islands. In the Northern Territory is the port and laid-back, multicultural city of Darwin, where many ships stop whilst cruising Australia's top end.

  • Joining Fremantle as ports on the Western Coast are the isolated towns of Broome and Port Hedland, both giving access to day tours in the vast outback of Western Australia. Camel tours are popular amongst cruise visitors to Broome!

  • The southern coast of Australia is a little cooler than the tropics of the north, but has some equally beautiful destinations. Esperance has a picturesque coast of turquoise water meeting white sand and rugged cliffs, perfect for summer watersports. Adelaide is a city of wine, stylish architecture and boutique shopping. A stop here is a great excuse for a day of wine tasting in the Barossa Valley!

  • As far south as you can go is Hobart, the capital of the island and state of Tasmania. Hobart is an interesting historical city, and also a gateway to the spectacular wilderness of Tasmania.
