Albany Cruises: Cruise in Western Australia

Albany is a small port city in Western Australia, about 400 kilometres south of the metropolis that is Perth. Based around the stunning Princess Royal Harbour, it was the first established European settlement in the area and has an interesting history as well as a beautiful coastline and surrounding National Parks.

The Port: Docking in Albany

Ships arriving in Albany will tie up at a commercial wharf to the east of the CBD. It is a short walk to the centre of town, and generally the Port Authority will run shuttles to get passengers there quick. If there are strong winds, ships may be required to anchor in King George Sound and transfer passengers via tender boats.

The City: Amazing Albany

History lovers will enjoy the bits of Australia's story which are on display in Albany.

  • The Albany Convict Gaol is a restored prison complex which was built for convicts shipped to the colonies from Britain in 1852. It serves as a museum, and along with the Residency Museum and buildings from Albany's early settlement, teaches the history of Albany.

  • Other historic buildings in and around the city include the Old Post Office, the Princess Royal Fortress, the old Whaling Station and the Patrick Taylor Cottage Museum which is the oldest surviving dwelling in Western Australia.

  • Middleton Beach and Emu Point are both stunning beaches which are not far from the city centre. They are swimming beaches, and Emu Point is very sheltered and great for families with kids.

  • Those wishing to avoid the open ocean could also try the Leisure and Aquatic Centre! Whale watching tours and diving are great options for ways to spend an active day in Albany, and there are also plenty of walking tracks, some taking in the historic points downtown and some scenic trails on Mount Clarence.

  • Urban delights in Albany are not lacking- there are plenty of restaurants, many of which serve freshly-caught seafood. There are also bars and cafes for a drink and chat.

  • Albany Farmer's Market is held every Saturday morning, and the Boatshed Market every Sunday morning. The Boatshed is located on the harbour and the market offers produce, baked goods, local jams and seafood straight from the docks.

I wish to travel in May or June with a lady friend. I have had a total hip replacement so use a walking aid on wheels. I need to know the best deck to book on with easy access to dining room entertainment etc. as I am unable to get up or down stairs. Can you please help me with that. I have already completed two river cruises in Europe. Thank you. Isabel Graham.
