It’s a dream that almost all of us have had at one time or another: a tropical cruise landing in our laps, without having to organise or pay for any of it. For Aussie cruise fans Graham and Susy White, this dream scenario has just become a reality. Graham and Susy signed up to the Cruise Sale Finder mailing list, which not only put them in line to receive all the latest and greatest cruise deals, but also placed them in the draw to win a 10 night cruise across the South Pacific.
The Whites will be stepping aboard the Pacific Eden in Sydney before swinging by a selection of the most enviable cruise destinations in the South Pacific. Here’s a small snapshot of what’s in store on this Discover Vanuatu cruise:
The island of Maré is the spitting image of an ideal tropical paradise. The soft white sands, the lush greenery, the sparkling blue waters - it’s all there. Those who want to do a little exploring will need sturdy shoes thanks to the volcanic rock which makes up the bones of the island, but most will be content to be seduced by Maré’s call to relaxation.
This is Vanuatu’s capital, and the island nation’s only real large settlement. The Port Vila Market is one of the first attractions that cruisers will find themselves drawn to, offering everything from succulent fresh fruit to tropical flowers to locally handcrafted goods. Those who are keen to venture a little further afield can take a dip in the incredibly scenic Mele Cascades.
Stepping off onto this uninhabited islet will have visitors feeling as though they’re the very first to discover the unspoiled paradise of Mystery Island. That doesn’t mean that guests can’t get a taste of local culture though. The inhabitants of nearby Aneityum come across to the island when cruise ships call in, so in addition to enjoying the white sands and coral reef, cruisers can peruse local handicrafts.
Isle of Pines
The Isle of Pines boasts all the tropical assets of the locations mentioned above, but with a couple of extras thrown in for good measure. The Piscine Naturelle is a world renowned natural rock pool which teems with colourful fish which have no qualms swimming right up to humans, and for the truly adventurous, there’s the local delicacy Escargots de I’lle des Pins - delicious, giant forest snails.
The capital of New Caledonia will be the final stop for the Pacific Eden before it heads back to Australian shores. This low key city presents cruisers with lots of excellent eateries, not to mention all kinds of opportunities for retail therapy in a place which combines the best of French, Pacific and Asian cultures.
If you’re feeling a tinge of cruise jealousy as this point, no one could blame you.
