It's just been announced that MSC Cruises, renowned for their international flavour and European-style cruising, has teamed up with tech giant Samsung to bring cruisers the very best of what the future can offer.
The exclusive strategic partnership between the two industry-leading companies means that Samsung will be fully equipping all of MSC Cruises next generation ships. From high tech gadgets for passengers and crew to specialised medical equipment for the onboard medical centre, MSC's new ships will make the most of Samsung's cutting edge technology.
Cruise fans can expect to see the next-gen ships by the middle of next year: the MSC Meraviglia and the MSC Seaside will come into service in June and December 2017, respectively, and will be the first vessels to contain the Samsung tech.
Some of the devices and technology to be included on MSC's new smart ships:
- Visual displays: in-cabin flat screen HDTV's, public screens and displays, ad hoc digital signage solutions like augmented reality mirrors
- Mobile solutions: smartphones, tablets and accessories for virtual reality and 360° digital experience
- Medical equipment: expert technology for on-board medical centres
- Printing solutions: in support of MSC Cruises' business needs
MSC Cruises CEO Gianni Onorato said of the partnership and MSC's new smart ships, "As well as being revolutionary in concept, design and marine architecture, the Meraviglia and Seaside generation ships mark a leap forward in terms of cruise ship technology. Equipped throughout with Samsung's latest-technology products and solutions, they will make available to our guests the best of the next generation in smart ships at sea."
The Samsung Italia President Carlo Barlocco spoke of how the partnership would act as a catalyst for innovation within the entire cruise industry. "The partnership with MSC Cruises is an example of how our advanced solutions are able to enhance the passenger experience: not only monitors and tablets to access information and infotainment contents on board but also advanced medical equipment to support first aid in case of emergencies. This partnership, finally, allows Samsung and MSC to bring innovation to the whole cruise industry."
While things like "printing solutions" may not excite your average cruiser, there's no doubt that innovations like augmented reality mirrors will push the boundaries of what we can expect from modern cruise ships, while other pieces of tech will provide superior entertainment and convenience - raising the quality of life for MSC cruise passengers to a level previously unknown.
One of the most exciting aspects about the partnership however is the fact that the new MSC smart ships will raise the bar for all the vessels that come after them - not just for MSC but across the cruise industry.
There's no doubt that the future of cruising is looking very bright indeed.
