The TV entertainment sensation sets sail

The Voice is a TV sensation, a popular singing show which prioritises voices over appearances with its famed "blind choice" format. Now, it's setting sail with Princess Cruises to bring the excitement of live shows, stage performances and tough competition to their passengers - could you be crowned the winner of The Voice of the Ocean?

Find your Voice with Princess Cruises

Debuting on the Regal Princess in October, to be followed by the Royal Princess, Caribbean Princess and eight as-yet unnamed ships before May 2016, the competition will be open to all Princess passengers who think they have what it takes.

Karaoke-style try-out sessions will kick off the process, during which fellow passengers and staff will decide who moves on to the live show. Those chosen will have the opportunity to meet with mentors from Princess Cruises' entertainment staff during the cruise to rehearse and improve, preparing the best possible performance for their moment in the spotlight. What a great opportunity for aspiring vocalists!

The Voice of the Ocean program culminates in a live show on the last night of the cruise, hosted by the Cruise Director. This will feature up to nine contestants in the ship's main theatre, and is not only fun for the participants but a great evening of entertainment for the ship's passengers!

A trio of coaches, which might include the Hotel General Manager, the Captain, a guest entertainer or another high-profile member of the ship, will listen from their rotating "I Want You" chairs, just like on the TV show.  Each will pick a team of up to three performers, and from there choose one finalist. The audience will have the final say via voting remotes, and the winner will be awarded a trophy and the Voice of the Ocean title.

Although the competition is not yet planned for Princess Cruises' Australia-based ships, it's something to look forward to for those who travel beyond the South Pacific for their cruising adventures.

Sing and dance your heart out at sea

This isn't your only opportunity to hit the stage during a cruise holiday. Many ships will offer karaoke competitions for adults and teens during their daily programmed activities, and some like Royal Caribbean and Carnival will run talent shows on some ships and sailings.

In true ocean liner tradition, dancing competitions are a recurring theme amongst the cruise lines. P&O Cruises UK has "Strictly Come Dancing" themed cruises which are modelled after  the popular BBC series, with performances by guest dancers, as well as Strictly Come Dancing competitions across the fleet on all cruises with more than three sea days.

Holland America offers a "Dancing with the Stars: At Sea" competition on every sailing, complete with dance classes for participants. Their special Champions Cruise each year brings together the winners from each cruise to battle it out for the ultimate Champion title and Mirrorball Trophy. The line also has themed DWTS sailings throughout the year.

I have enjoyed visiting as much of the world as possible over the years. Europe and the Mediterranean are personal favourites, but there is so much to see very close to our little Australasian corner of the globe- one of my top travel experiences was snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles in New Caledonia! Cruising is a fantastic way to see it all, and we hope to make booking a cruise easier for both first-timers and old salts. From ship tips to destination news and views, we will keep you up-to-date. Happy cruising!
