P&O Australia's welcome bash for the Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden
is coming up fast, and they have released new details about what's going to go down on the 25th of November in the biggest cruise extravaganza Sydney Harbour
has ever seen. The godmothers for the new ships have been revealed, and it has also been announced that they will use social media to make the names official during the spectacular dual christening ceremony.
Godmothers take to Twitter
Actress Kate Ritchie, best known for her long tenure as Sally Fletcher on Home and Away, will do the honours for the Pacific Eden
, proclaiming the name officially on her Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts. Popular Aussie songstress Jessica Mauboy will do the same for the Pacific Aria
. The ceremony takes place after the fleet have sailed single-file into the harbour in the early morning. At around 8:30am, the two newcomers will sail either side of Fort Denison, where the godmothers will perform their duties, champagne bottles will be smashed onto their bows, and the P&O fleet will become a family of five.
The line is very happy to have the two famous Australian women as godmothers for the new ships, said the CEO of parent company Carnival Australia
, Ann Sherry (pictured in top image with Jessica Mauboy and P&O Cruise Senior Vice President Sture Myrmell). "Both Jess and Kate are well known and well-loved around the country. They epitomise modern Australia and really embody the new look and feel of P&O Cruises
so we are delighted they will be naming these very special ships - and in such a modern way."
She also said of the ceremony, "it will be a history-making day - we will have five ships on Sydney Harbour, a dual christening and we'll be officially naming the ships via Twitter, which we believe is a world first."
Two Australian charities will benefit from the event, as the two godmothers nominate organisations to receive a donation from P&O Cruises. Kate is yet to nominate her charity, while Jessica has chosen the Indigenous Literacy Foundation as the recipient.
Five Ship Spectacular
The day's event will involve not only passengers on the five P&O ships but onlookers around Sydney Harbour too. The five vessels sailing in formation will be quite the sight to see, and they will then tie up at various berths around the harbour for onboard concerts in the afternoon. Along with Jessica Mauboy herself on her godship the Pacific Aria
, artists will include Stan Walker, The Veronicas, Justice Crew and Samantha Jade.
The piece de resistance for the day's celebrations will be a fireworks display for the entertainment of anyone in the area, before the ships depart Sydney. The show starts at 8:45pm, so if you are near the harbour don't forget to find a suitable vantage point.
