Radio and relaxation: Hamish and Andy at sea

Hamish and Andy, Australia's popular comedy duo made famous by Rove, drive-time radio and their "Hamish and Andy's Gap Year" series on Nine Network, are heading to sea. In an unprecedented broadcast event, they will present a five-day live show to listeners right from their various locations around the South Pacific.

Cruising with Hamish and Andy
The cruise sails in June from Sydney to Vanuatu, and 110 lucky winners from across Australia will join the boys - keep your ears open for this competition on the Hit Network! It has been dubbed "The People's Cruise" and it is a first not only for Hamish and Andy but for Australian radio in general.

What will be the highlights of the experience for these comedians? When asked, they listed those features of the Carnival Spirit "Funship 2.0" which appeal to so many of us: mini golf, the dive-in cinema, the mighty Green Thunder, the Punchliner comedy club, free 24-hour pizza and ice-cream. Who wouldn't be excited about those holiday staples?

They added, "Everyone thinks we decided to broadcast from a cruise ship with 110 listeners just so we can drink and relax by one of the four pools onboard the ship each day. They are wrong...because there are only three pools."

The South Pacific's biggest broadcast
A broadcast from a ship at sea like this one has only been made possible in recent years with the improvement of satellite technology and onboard internet availability. Rigorous testing has been done over the region to ensure it's a feasible plan, and Carnival's recent upgrades to its internet service on Australia-based ships have also been of help in the endeavour.

The five live shows will include one from Sydney Harbour before setting sail, three from the middle of the Pacific as the ship travels and one in the idyllic anchorage off the uninhabited Mystery Island. No word yet on what exactly the shows will include, but we are imagining a bit of a holiday vibe.

Jennifer Vanderkreeke, Carnival Cruise Line Vice President Australia, said the line was looking forward to hosting the funny duo and sharing the delights of the Carnival Spirit with their audience.

"Carnival shares the same fun ethos as Hamish and Andy. We're all about fun, free-spirited holidays for social, outgoing holidaymakers - people like Hamish and Andy and their listeners, who don't take themselves too seriously and are always up for a laugh and some fun."

"We've never attempted anything as ambitious as this live broadcast and can't wait to see what fun we'll get up to with the lads. We're expecting Green Thunder to get a good workout for a start."

I have enjoyed visiting as much of the world as possible over the years. Europe and the Mediterranean are personal favourites, but there is so much to see very close to our little Australasian corner of the globe- one of my top travel experiences was snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles in New Caledonia! Cruising is a fantastic way to see it all, and we hope to make booking a cruise easier for both first-timers and old salts. From ship tips to destination news and views, we will keep you up-to-date. Happy cruising!
