The Aussie-based Carnival Spirit is heading to China for winter 2018

Carnival has announced today that their popular Carnival Spirit, a year-round presence in Australia for quite a while now, will reposition to China for the winter months in 2018. The ship has a scheduled dry dock in Singapore in autumn, and from there will proceed to Shanghai which will become its homeport for a few months.

Why China?
Carnival Cruise Line have been wanting to establish a stronger presence in China for a long time, and the Carnival Miracle had originally been chosen to be the first to homeport in the up-and-coming cruising ground. However, the line decided that the Spirit was in a better position to relocate for several months, especially considering her handy drydock in Singapore.

Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy said of the move: "It is important for the Carnival brand to establish a presence in the Asia cruise market and after evaluating many different options we decided that the seasonal deployment of Carnival Spirit in 2018 was the best opportunity for us."

What about Aus?
The good news for Australian cruisers is that currently plans for the Carnival Spirit to relocate to China apply only to the 2018 winter season. Following on from her secondment, plans remain in place for the Carnival Splendour to take her place in sailing from China.

"Carnival Spirit has performed strongly in its home market of Australia since its Sydney debut in 2012 and it will continue to be based there, with Carnival Legend again joining her sister ship Down Under over the 2017-18 and 2018-19 Australian summers. The two ships have proven extremely popular and we look forward to continuing to deliver Carnival's fun holiday experience to existing and new Australasian guests over the coming years" Ms Duffy elaborated.

Carnival Spirit

The Spirit's China itineraries have not yet been released, but should offer a unique chance for Australian and Kiwi cruisers to experience a great new and exciting cruising region on a ship that is near and dear to their hearts - and tailored to Australian tastes! When they are available for booking, you will find them on our Carnival Spirit cruise sale page.

I have enjoyed visiting as much of the world as possible over the years. Europe and the Mediterranean are personal favourites, but there is so much to see very close to our little Australasian corner of the globe- one of my top travel experiences was snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles in New Caledonia! Cruising is a fantastic way to see it all, and we hope to make booking a cruise easier for both first-timers and old salts. From ship tips to destination news and views, we will keep you up-to-date. Happy cruising!
