Sprawling along the south shore of Oahu, Honolulu is the capital and largest city of the state of Hawaii. It’s home to the famous Waikiki Beach, but the city is much more than just a picture-postcard beach resort. Laid-back Hawaiian charm mixes with the boisterous urbanity of the sizeable city, and visitors often find that Honolulu has it all: sun and sand, history and heritage, a great dining scene and all kinds of things to do, see, hear and experience.
From Honolulu’s first settlement by Polynesian migrants in the 11th century to its current status as seaport, surfing mecca and beach destination, the city has always been closely affiliated with the ocean. Travellers often enjoy a wide variety of watersports including parasailing, scuba diving, sailing, wakeboarding and even jetpack rides. Getting onboard a Hawaii cruise is the perfect way to farewell Honolulu and continue the oceanic adventures for several nights or days.
Honolulu cruise lines and destinations
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to cruise lines with itineraries departing Honolulu - no operator wants to deny its passengers a Hawaii cruise! Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity and Holland America all sail from the city to offer a range of different cruising styles from the traditional and relaxed to the colourful and family-friendly. The P&O cruise line and Princess cruise line also occasionally come through the area. These lines will be cruising to Hawaii, around its stunning islands and out of it in the current year and for the more organised, 2016 and 2017.
Transpacific crossings are a common feature on the roster of Hawaii cruise departures. These long voyages leave Honolulu and sail across the ocean to visit many of the islands which lie to the south: Tahiti, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and many more. These Pacific Islands cruises often disembark in Sydney on Australia's east coast. Cruises from Hawaii to Australia or cruises from Australia to Hawaii are a popular option for many travellers. Alternatively, it’s possible to get on a cruise from Honolulu headed northeast towards Vancouver or another North American city.
Honolulu cruise port
There are two cruise ship terminals in Honolulu Harbour: the primary one at Piers 10-11 adjacent to the Aloha Tower Marketplace, and the alternative terminal at Pier 2 on Ala Moana Boulevard. Often lines will provide a shuttle bus from Aloha Tower to the Pier 2 terminal.
The extensive local bus network is easily accessed from either terminal. The Waikiki Trolley, a hop-on hop-off tourist trolley, has a stop at the Aloha Tower Marketplace which makes it very easy for cruise visitors to sightsee. It’s also not far to walk into downtown from either cruise terminal.
