Emerald Princess Overview

The Emerald Princess is a beautiful cruise ship with an amazing array of entertainment, dining and accommodation options. As one of the largest in the Princess fleet, she has a busy schedule that takes her all around the world, from the Baltic states to the South Pacific.

Launched in 2007, this vessel represented a few firsts for the Princess fleet. She was the first ship to launch the cruise liner's flagship 'Movies Under the Stars' entertainment feature, as well as the first to launch 'The Sanctuary', an adults-only retreat.

The Emerald Princess specs
This large vessel weighs in at 113,561 tonnes, measures 951 feet in length and spans 15 passenger decks. She can accommodate a maximum of 3,080 passengers and 1,200 crew.

Inside the Emerald Princess
Last refurbished in December 2012, the interior decor on board the Emerald Princess is stylish and contemporary. That said, the ship has retained much of her original look and feel. Constructed by Fincantieri in Italy, several of the rooms are Italian-themed, including the two main dining areas, as well as the 'social hub of the ship', the Italian Piazza.

Activities on the Emerald Princess
The Emerald Princess is abuzz with activities both day and night. With four freshwater pools, a luxurious spa, several public lounges, a wide array of pubs, bars and restaurants, sports facilities, a shopping centre, a library, an art gallery and much, much more, there are plenty of enjoyable activities to suit all ages and interests.

Of particular note is the 'edutainment' programme, a chance for cruisers to learn about an array of interesting topics, from ice carving to geography. Guests may also choose to attend lectures about upcoming ports of call, a fantastic opportunity to prepare yourself for shore excursions.

Emerald Princess restaurants and bars
The dining choices on board the Emerald Princess are extensive without being overwhelming. Guests can choose between traditional restaurants with fixed seating times, as well as flexible 'anytime' dining. There are also several casual eateries on board, perfect for when you feel like a tasty, no-frills meal.

When evening comes around, there's no shortage of places to enjoy a drink. The bars and lounges all have a warm, welcoming atmosphere - and their own draw cards. Whether you are looking to enjoy some live music or would prefer to relax to the sound of a pianist, you'll find a bar on board to suit your tastes.

Emerald Princess itineraries and shore excursions
The Princess cruise line is renowned for offering exceptional shore excursions, and the Emerald Princess is no exception. Although the excursions available will depend on your destination, you can definitely expect to be amazed by the wide range of trips to choose from. There should be a mixture of scenic, cultural and low-key activities at each port of call. Some examples include a private tour of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, a scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast in Italy, and a winery tour in Oia, Greece.

It is advised to book your shore excursions when you purchase your Emerald Princess ticket, however staff can usually accommodate last-minute reservations. The shore excursions office is located on deck 7.

Cabins on board the Emerald Princess cruise ship

The ship has a total of 1,539 guest cabins, of which 881 are balcony staterooms, meaning your chances of securing a gorgeous sea view are relatively high. Other stateroom options include exterior ocean view cabins and interior cabins.

All of the staterooms come equipped with basic amenities such as a writing desk, a mini-fridge and a safe. Each room also has a flat-screen television with access to a range of films, tv series and news channels, as well as several music choices.

Those looking for extra space should try either the mini-suite or the suite. These rooms are more spacious and feature additional luxuries such as complimentary toiletries, separate lounges and plush deck-chairs.

Rooms measure between 163 square feet (interior cabin) and 689 square feet (large suite with private balcony). There are 2 family suites available, and 31 wheelchair accessible cabins.

Entertainment on board the Emerald Princess cruise ship

Be prepared to be dazzled by the impressive array of entertainment options available. It all starts at the Italian Piazza, the social hub of the ship, which is home to live entertainment such as comedians, musicians and stiltwalkers throughout the day and well into the evening. The International Cafe looks out on to the Piazza, making it the perfect spot to people watch while you enjoy your morning coffee.

Emerald Princess nightlife
Like what you see at the Italian Piazza? Then you will thoroughly enjoy the original production shows at the Princess Theater. Be sure to grab a pre-show drink at the nautical-themed Wheelhouse Bar before you take your seat.

Another great venue for evening entertainment is Club Fusion. This comfortable, welcoming lounge plays host to a variety of themed evenings, from trivia nights to 'Bee at Sea', a spelling competition.

More in the mood for dancing? You'll be in luck at Skywalkers Nightclub, the ship's late-night disco venue. A live vocalist also performs most nights at Crooners Bar, which is well worth a visit if you love cocktails, as it features more than 52 different types of Martinis.

If this isn't enough to keep you entertained, then there's always the Gatsby's Casino. This is open day and night and always draws a good crowd. Located in the heart of the casino is a great little bar, the Speakeasy Cigar Lounge.

Emerald Princess pools, spas and fitness facilities
Water babies can take their pick from four freshwater pools. The Calypso Pool is popular day and night as it is also home to Movies Under the Stars, a big-screen showcasing some of the latest films. The Neptune Pool and the Terrace Pool are quiet and slightly more private - perfect for relaxing on a sunny day.

There is also a pool in the Lotus Spa, which spans two decks and offers a range of tempting treatments, from hot stone massages to body scrubs. This Spa is also home to a relaxing Thermal Suite, featuring heated loungers, a tropical rainforest shower and steam rooms. Guests can purchase an unlimited pass to the Thermal Suite on board.

Those looking to keep fit will have no trouble thanks to the ship's fully equipped gym. Featuring more than 40 cardio machines, as well as free weights and stretching areas, this is a great spot for a workout. Group fitness classes are also available, such as yoga, pilates and cycling. Alternatively, guests might prefer to burn some calories at the sports court. Here you will find people playing games such as ping-pong and basketball.

Emerald Princess for families
A family-friendly vessel, the Emerald Princess offers several entertainment options for children of all ages. There are four designated kid's areas: the Teen Centre, Youth Centre, Video Arcade and 'Chill Out' splash pool.

The two centres are kitted out with all of the latest entertainment technology, such as video games, movies, jukeboxes and foosball tables. There are also some more traditional activities like board games and arts and crafts.

Parents can also choose to enrol their kids into organised programmes. There are three different options, sorted by age: the Princess Pelicans for ages 3 to 7, the Shockwaves for ages 8-12 and Remix for ages 13 to 17. Experienced minders will arrange a variety of fun activities for each age group throughout the day.

Come nighttime, parents can leave their children in the Night Nursery, a complimentary group babysitting service open from 6pm to 2am. Please note spaces are limited, so this facility operates on a first come, first served basis.

I have enjoyed visiting as much of the world as possible over the years. Europe and the Mediterranean are personal favourites, but there is so much to see very close to our little Australasian corner of the globe- one of my top travel experiences was snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles in New Caledonia! Cruising is a fantastic way to see it all, and we hope to make booking a cruise easier for both first-timers and old salts. From ship tips to destination news and views, we will keep you up-to-date. Happy cruising!
