Diamond Princess Overview

Spacious, serene and stylish; these are just some of the words that spring to mind once you step inside the Diamond Princess. Despite being slightly older than some of other Princess ships, she has lost none of her elegance or grace.

Built in Japan, this lovely vessel has retained much of her original décor, such as the beautiful statues of peacocks, dragons and mermaids that adorn the Atrium.  Extensive refurbishments have ensured the ship's interior feels modern, yet still retains that classic comfort for which she is well loved.

The Diamond Princess cruise ship is a firm favourite among many regular cruisers in Australasia, and it's not hard to tell why; the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, combined with a dazzling array of activities, pools, spa retreats and nightlife, makes for a wonderful holiday no matter what your destination.

The Diamond Princess specs are in line with what you would expect from a Princess vessel of this capacity. The ship is 952 feet long, 205 feet high, has 18 decks and will travel up to a maximum speed of 22 knots. Rooms range in size from 168 to 1329 square feet.

Diamond Princess bars and restaurants
The restaurants on board the Diamond Princess do not disappoint. Passengers are spoilt for choice; there are four main dining rooms, one formal restaurant, as well as several specialty options. With so many food options to choose from, you might as well try everything once!

The four 'Eat Any Time' dining rooms have a standard menu with a small selection of specialities, while the more formal International Dining Room has the look and feel of a plush restaurant, complete with an interesting and exotic menu. Those looking for a casual eatery will enjoy Horizon Court, a buffet-style service open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

After dinner the bars and clubs come to life; be sure to catch some live music at Club Fusion or make the time to see a hallmark Diamond Princess show at the Princess Theater.

Activities and entertainment on board Diamond Princess
From showing off your general knowledge skills at the trivia table, to learning how to hula dance or play the ukulele, the array of activities on the Diamond Princess will keep you busy morning til night.

Interactive activities such as Ping-Pong, poker and golf offer an opportunity to socialise with other passengers - and don't miss the obstacle contests, these are great fun whether you are a spectator or competitor.

By night the list of entertainment choices only gets longer, with live music, dancing and theatre right on your doorstep.

Diamond Princess itineraries and shore excursions
Depending on the Diamond Princess' schedule, you will find her sailing the seas of Australia and New Zealand, navigating the beautiful Malaysian peninsula or exploring the coastlines of Korea and Japan, plus many more exotic destinations. Excursions will therefore depend on your destination, but you can expect anything from an informative day at Auckland Museum to an adventurous hike in Japan's Shirakami Mountains.

Cabins on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship

There is a total of 1,351 cabins on board. All Diamond Princess rooms are equipped with coffee machines, mini-fridges, safes, telephones, full-length mirrors, hair dryers and flat-screen televisions. Some rooms may also have Japanese-style toilets.

Daytime activities on Diamond Princess
Card games, trivia, bingo, language classes, film screenings, shows, golf tournaments... the list goes on! There's no time to be bored on the Diamond Princess.

The ship boasts several activity rooms, including an art gallery, 24-hour internet café, library & writing room, as well as a range of high-end fashion shops such as Swarovski and Clinique.

Those looking for some peace and quiet will be well looked-after in the Sanctuary, an on-deck retreat for adults, featuring plush lounge chairs, mp3 players loaded with relaxing music and a private food service offering light snacks.

Diamond Princess pools and gyms
Take your pick from four freshwater pools; Calypso Reef, Neptune's Reef and the Terrace Pool are all great spots for a dip, while the Lap Pool is perfect for keeping up your fitness. The ship also has several Oasis hot tubs.

For ultimate relaxation, head up to the top of the ship to experience a Diamond Princess exclusive: the world's largest open air Japanese Bath at sea. This gorgeous sanctuary features a combination of indoor and outdoor bathing areas, as well as sauna rooms and sweeping ocean views. You won't want to leave!

Also be sure to make the most of the ship's fitness facilities. The Lotus Spa® gym has all the latest equipment, while the nine-hole putting course is a fun way to fit in a little bit of exercise.

Diamond Princess nightlife: bars, lounges and theatres
With three bars, four lounges, an impressive Grand Casino and two theatres, there's no shortage of places to party the night away on board the Diamond Princess.

Why not start the night in one of the ship's four stylish lounges? The Wheelhouse Bar, Churchill Lounge, Crooners Bar and Wake View Bar are all comfortable spots to enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif or a quiet nightcap.

Dancers will feel right at home in one of Diamond Princess' bars; Skywalker's Nightclub is always heaving, while Club Fusion offers live music and the Explorers Lounge has a variety of entertainment options, depending on the schedule.

For a quieter evening, enjoy one of the hallmark shows at the Princess Theater, a large indoor space with great acoustics and exceptional performances. Alternatively, make the most of balmy summer evenings at the Movies Under the Stars outdoor theatre.

Diamond Princess for families
The Diamond Princess is a family-friendly vessel, with designated youth and teen areas to keep your children occupied. The Princess Pelicans caters for ages 3-7, Shockwaves for ages 8-12 and Remix for ages 13-17.

In these areas you will find activities such as arts and crafts, foosball tables, board games, video games, jukeboxes and the latest movies. Some scheduled activities include kids' karaoke, pajama nights and pizza parties.  There is also a Splash Pool for young ones, as well as 'The Fun Zone' and 'Teen Center'.

Parents are expected to look after their children during mealtimes, but they will be relieved to find a wide variety of kid-friendly options on the menu in the main dining rooms. Although private babysitting is not available, there are some scheduled evening activities for certain age groups.

I have enjoyed visiting as much of the world as possible over the years. Europe and the Mediterranean are personal favourites, but there is so much to see very close to our little Australasian corner of the globe- one of my top travel experiences was snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles in New Caledonia! Cruising is a fantastic way to see it all, and we hope to make booking a cruise easier for both first-timers and old salts. From ship tips to destination news and views, we will keep you up-to-date. Happy cruising!
