Total length of cruise: 21- nights

Valparaiso (Santiago), Chile
Find the UNESCO World Heritage site in the Old Quarter of Valparaiso, which hugs its steep amphitheater-like hillside peppered with bright and colorful residences and charming church steeples. Ride one of the city's many funiculars to take in the views of land and sea. About two hours inland, the steppes of the Andes rise up behind Santiago, Chile's capital and economic center. Explore such city landmarks as the Plaza de Armas, La Chascona (one of Pablo Neruda's homes), or one of the paseos in the Centro. But first, consider stopping for a stroll up Santa Lucia hill, which features ornate designs and architecture. Get your bearings, then toast the city at the end of the day with a glass of Carménère, cherry, deep-red, and smoky.

Puerto Montt, Chile
Gateway to the scenic Lake District, a series of fragrant eucalyptus and pine forests, icy lakes, Bavarian hamlets and luminous snowcapped volcanoes.

Castro
A 30-minute ferry crossing away from mainland Chile across the Chacao Channel, verdant Isla Chiloe – the largest in the Chiloe archipelago – is another world. Sixteen wooden churches are clustered around Castro on the island's east coast, each with UNESCO World Heritage status. Traditional palafitos (houses on stilts) dot its shores. To the west, Chiloe National Park is home to foxes, sea lions and otters, and provides unspoiled terrain for horseback riding, sea kayaking and fishing. Many Castro houses are elaborately shingled with intricate designs, and the cathedral is a lovely, vaulted structure made with local hardwoods.

Puerto Chacabuco
Here in the heart of the Chilean archipelago, discover stunning scenery: dense rain forests, bright-blue lakes and snow-covered mountain peaks.

Punta Arenas
The southern finial of the South American continent is as fractured as frost crystals, but the inlets, bays, and passages around the Strait of Magellan are home to a million wonders. Punta Arenas is the threshold to them all. From here, cruise visitors can venture to the high scarps of Torres del Paine National Park, the penguin colony at Seno Otway, or the Martian volcanic topography of Pali Aike National Park. Punta Arenas worth lingering in, as well. Visit the tree-lined Plaza de Armas square or walk 10 minutes farther to the top of La Cruz Hill. The city of 150,000 people lies at your feet. 850 miles farther south Antarctica begins.

Ushuaia
The southernmost town in the world, where dominating peaks loom on three sides; the fourth opens to the Beagle Channel, where sea lions bellow and king crab rules.

The Palmer Archipelago

Hope Bay (Esperanza Station), Paulet & Elephant Islands
At Hope Bay the scarlet chalets of Esperanza, an Argentine military and scientific station, stand in stark contrast to the white ice. On Paulet Island as several million Adélie penguins nest on every available beach. And at Elephant Island, hear the riveting account of Shackelton s ill-fated expedition and the crew s heroic daily struggle to survive.

Puerto Madryn
Situated in rugged Argentine Patagonia, Puerto Madryn was founded by Welsh immigrants in 1865. Enjoy a famous Welsh "tea" in the village of Gaiman; journey back in time 300 million years at the Paleontology Museum of Egidio Feruglio in Trelew; and see colonies of sea elephants, sea lions and seals in their natural habitat at Punta Norte.Scotland under the Southern Cross: moorlands, pubs, red phone booths, sheep ranches, a "cuppa tea." Plus penguins of every type: gentoo, Magellanic, king.

Montevideo
Friendly and genteel, Montevideo honors colonial customs: long lunches, siestas, high tea. Nearby: Colonia del Sacramento, the oldest city in Uruguay (ca. 1680) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Buenos Aires
They dance the tango in the street in this South American cultural and commercial capital. Because celebrations are simply a way of life here, local passions for excellent food and wine prevail as well. As world famous ports go, Buenos Aires offers the best of everything from luxe country living, to modern highlights, to more rustic excursions to the pampas — the fertile lowland ranches where gaucho cowboys roam and work. Gifts from the sea and land make for the most joyous of occasions while ashore. Plan on extending your stay in Buenos Aires so you can spend more time before or after your cruise and explore this intriguing city more comprehensively.
