Carnival Spirit Overview

With regular sailings to warm climates such as New Caledonia, Fiji and Vanuatu, the Carnival Spirit cruise ship has that summer holiday feeling all year round. There's three pools, an Aqua Park, a private adults-only spa area and plenty of bars to enjoy a relaxing cocktail.

The Sydney-based ship is a relatively recent addition to the Australian seas. The Carnival Spirit arrived in Australia in 2012 after undergoing an extensive $7 million refurbishment, which included the addition of several new bars and restaurants and the construction of a 180-foot-long waterslide called 'Green Thunder' (this is definitely not just for the kids!).

Carnival Spirit specs
At three footy fields long and 12 decks tall, Carnival Spirit is spacious and comfortable, yet also feels intimate and welcoming - you'll feel at home in no time.

Inside Carnival Spirit
The Carnival Spirit interiors are a feast for the senses. One moment you are in France, the next you are in Egypt. As you move through the ship you will become aware that every room has its own look and feel. The show lounge is adorned with Egyptian murals, while the Chippendale Library is reminiscent of a large English country house. Even the spa has its own theme, with Grecian murals and columns.

The ship's interior design creates an exuberant, playful atmosphere, allowing you to indulge your imagination and escape your everyday life. Not to mention the décor makes for great conversation with fellow cruisers.

Carnival Spirit bars and restaurants
If Carnival Spirit's interior takes you on a trip around the world, just wait until you taste some of the delicious food available. In keeping with the international theme, La Playa Grille Lido Restaurant offers a 'Taste of the Nations' option, serving a different cuisine for lunch every day.

La Playa Grille Lido Restaurant is also a great spot for a casual buffet breakfast. Here you'll find most morning meals, from pastries to pancakes and everything in between.

Come dinner time, you'll want to head to the Empire Restaurant, Carnival Spirit's 1300-seat formal dining space. This restaurant serves a wide range of entrees, mains and desserts, including all of your favourite modern classics.

Other food options include a 24-hour pizzeria, Fountains Café and Fat Jimmy's C-Side Grill by the pool. Those hankering for a taste of Australia will not be disappointed. The Carnival Spirit bars stock a selection of Australian beers, and there are several trained baristas on board to perfect your favourite caffeinated beverage.

Guests may want to note that all tips are pre-included in the Carnival Spirit fare prices, so no need to worry about calculating that extra 15 per cent.

Activities and entertainment
From Australia's largest Aqua Park at sea, to the luxurious Spa Carnival day spa, there are plenty of activities to suit everyone on board. Sporty types will appreciate the jogging tracks, basketball court and fully-equipped gym, while those looking to relax and unwind will find solace by the pool, at the library or in the adults-only Serenity Deck Area. There are also plenty of indoor activities such as arts and crafts, trivia contests and card games.

Come nightfall the Carnival Spirit truly comes alive, with more than 6 bars to choose from and an array of social opportunities. Be sure to pack some black-tie outfits for the 'Cruise Elegant' nights, where guests are invited to don their very best formal wear.

Carnival Spirit itineraries and shore excursions
The Carnival Spirit's schedule usually revolves around sailings to New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji. Make the most of the shore excursions and explore these beautiful islands.

All three destinations are wonderful for swimming and snorkelling, as well as nature walks and cultural activities. Some popular day excursions include a trip to Duck Island in Noumea and the Cascades Tour in Vanuatu.

Cabins on board the Carnival Spirit cruise ship

Approximately 80 per cent of the Carnival Spirit rooms are outside and a further 80 per cent of these have balconies or outdoor seating areas, so you've come to the right place if you want an ocean view. Cabin sizes range from 17.2 to 20.4 square metres.

All staterooms are equipped with basic amenities such as hair dryers, bedside lamps and vanity areas. They all have Australian power points and ample storage space. Most rooms cater for twin-shares or couples, but there are also 42 interconnecting rooms for large groups or families.

Those looking for a touch more space might be more suited to a Carnival Spirit suite; these are 25 square metres with attached 6 square metre balconies. An even grander option is a Penthouse Suite, which measures 345 square feet. All suites have separate living areas, a bathtub and extra large balconies.

Entertainment

There's never a dull moment on board the Carnival Spirit cruise ship. Known for its fun, welcoming atmosphere, the vessel has an array of activities to suit early risers, night owls and everyone in between.

Carnival Spirit by day
Popular daytime activities include arts & crafts, trivia, card games, bingo and mini golf. There are also a few fun team competitions to keep the kids entertained, such as the 'Rubber Chicken Olympics' (a silly pool game) and towel-animal making.

If you've seen any Carnival Spirit photos featuring men with particularly hairy chests, don't be alarmed, it's likely they were proudly entering the 'Men's Hairy Chest Contest', a regular competition that always draws a good crowd.

Carnival Spirit pools, gyms and more
With three pools on board, as well as the Carnival WaterWorks Aqua Park, there is no shortage of places to make a splash. There are also several hot tubs throughout the ship.

The gym offers spectacular ocean views from every piece of equipment, thanks to its tiered design. Here you should find all the equipment you need for a good workout, such as treadmills, rowing machines and cross trainers. There are also free fitness classes in the aerobics room and two jogging tracks.

Nightlife: Carnival Spirit bars
Be careful not to tire yourself out during the day, as you don't want to miss out on Carnival Spirit's bars and nightlife. There are 12 lounges throughout the ship, catering for all tastes from jazz to country to modern dance.

The Atrium Bar is the perfect place to grab an aperitif before dinner, while the Shanghai Bar is where to go if you enjoy piano singalongs. Karaoke enthusiasts will love Club Cool and sports fans will feel right at home in the Champions' Sports Bar, which screens most major matches. If you're looking to be entertained, head to the Pharaoh's Palace, where you might catch a comedian or cover band, depending on the Carnival Spirit schedule.

There is also a Casino onboard, with tables available for blackjack, poker, roulette, as well as more than 200 slot machines.

Carnival Spirit for families
Your children will be begging to go on another cruise after a holiday on board the Carnival Spirit. There are free children's programmes catering to five different age groups.

Little ones will be kept entertained with activities such as face-painting and magic shows, while older children can choose from a range of organised games or make a splash at the Aqua Park.

Teenagers will likely be found hanging out in the teen lounge or at Club 02, which serves mocktails and plays the latest movies.

While there are no in-cabin babysitting services available, there are several group childcare options, such as the 'Night Owls' slumber party.
