Carnival Legend Overview

Carnival Legend cruise ship
For a legendary cruise experience, it's hard to go past a ship with the promise right there in its name. The Carnival Legend has recently become an Aussie legend, and toes the line well between North American exuberance and laid-back antipodean fun.

The ship joined fleetmate Carnival Spirit in 2014 to sail from Australia and underwent a $47 million makeover to present a fresh face to cruisers Down Under, complete with local touches. Her unique and fun venues have proved to be a hit in the market and many Australians have enjoyed a cruise with Carnival cruises.

Inside the Carnival Legend
The Carnival Legend's interiors are designed around the Carnival "Fun Ship" concept, and the ship certainly comes across as a place where you can expect to have a good time. The casual atmosphere means she fits right in down in the South Pacific.

Special features added during the 2014 'Aussification' upgrade include a pub, some fun waterpark features, local power outlets and slot machines, some new menus and a general freshen up to leave her sparkling and new. The ship's theme remains the same: many public spaces are dedicated to various myths and legends of the world, from Camelot to Medusa to unicorns.

Carnival Legend dining and drinking
The options are extensive when it comes to meal times on the Carnival Legend. From the multi-level main dining room to small eateries around the ship such as an appetizer bar, ice cream machines, a deli and a pub, all included in your cruise fare, there is something for every craving or food mood. Specialty options add some supplementary gourmet dining for a fee - and of course the complimentary 24-hour room service will fill in any gaps.

A grand total of sixteen bars and lounges spread across twelve decks means there are plenty of places to go when you're feeling a bit parched. The RedFrog Pub offers favourite Aussie beers, the Piano Bar offers singalongs to go with your wine, and the options just get better from there.

What to do on the Carnival Legend: pools and more
The Lido deck is where you'll find the Carnival Legend's three pools. The kiddies also have their own wading pool, and the Carnival WaterWorks area includes the fantastic Australia-only Green Thunder waterslide for the thrillseekers.

The pools are a centrepoint of life onboard, but they aren't all the Carnival Legend has to offer activity-wise - far from it. With Camp Carnival, Circle C, O2 and Dr Seuss at Sea for the kids, the grown ups will be free to enjoy classes and demonstrations, competitions, bingo, mini golf, spa treatments and more. And that's just during the daytime! The Carnival Legend evening entertainment is legendary. Stage shows and productions, bars and nightclubs - dinner is just the beginning of your nighttime fun.

Carnival Legend itineraries and excursions
Summers Down Under are perfect for a tropical trip to the South Pacific islands, and that's how the Carnival Legend spends much of her time. Eight to twelve-night itineraries amongst the islands of Melanesia are her bread and butter, with the occasional jaunt to the beautiful wildernesses and interesting cities of Tasmania and New Zealand thrown into the mix.

Onshore, the fun continues with shore excursions to show Carnival passengers the best of every port. They take care of all the details so all you have to do is relax and enjoy the ride, just like you do onboard. Possibilities range from chilled-out sightseeing to action-packed adventure - ask your cruise consultant about what's available in each port.

Cabins on board the Carnival Legend

Relax at the end of a busy day in your Carnival Legend stateroom. The ship's 1,062 staterooms fit into four basic categories: Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite, meaning there's a cabin to fit any budget and preference. All are well-appointed and tastefully furnished to provide a haven of privacy and serenity.

The Carnival Legend's layout is designed for sea views, with more than eighty percent of cabins offering one. It is also great for families with 53 sets of interconnecting staterooms. Regardless of category, your cabin aboard the Carnival Legend will include  plenty of closet and drawer space, a flat-screen TV, a fridge, a phone, a safe and of course, a bathroom!

Entertainment

The Carnival Legend's entertainment options are numerous. Here's a brief rundown!

Carnival Legend pools and fitness
On the Lido Deck, you have your choice of pool to sit beside or splash around in. The Avalon Pool and Camelot Pool are separated midships by the Avalon Bar: that's where you get your fruity cocktails. Aft is the Adults-only Serenity with a pool featuring wonderful ocean views, and on the Sun Deck is the Carnival WaterWorks with Green Thunder waterslide.

Fit cruisers will love the spectacular Fitness Centre, which is tiered like an amphitheatre to offer every exerciser ocean views as a reward for their hard work. The spa pool in the middle is great for unwinding after a workout, and if it doesn't quite do the job properly there is always Spa Carnival with massages, beauty treatments and more.

The Sports Deck is encircled by a jogging track, and for something a little more fun and less strenuous, the mini golf and sports court are also found there.

Carnival Legend activities
The Carnival crew organises activities to keep everyone busy during sea days. These are detailed in The Fun Times, the daily newsletter. You can expect anything from the usual (and beloved) trivia nights and bingo to deck games, karaoke, dance classes and a range of other options.

If you need a little time to yourself, the ship also offers some solitary pursuits such as the video arcade, a library full of good books, art exhibitions, shopping and the casino.

Carnival Legend evening entertainment
The range of places to drink and socialise in the evenings is part of what makes the Carnival Legend such a "Fun Ship". Favourites include:

  • Tunes in the Piano Bar
  • Martini tastings
  • Mixologist competitions
  • Comedy acts from the Punchliner Comedy Club
  • Medusa's Lair dance club
  • Live music in the Odyssey and Atlantis lounges
  • Productions and musicals in Follies, the two-level main show lounge

Carnival Legend for kids
The younger ones certainly aren't left out onboard the Carnival Legend. The Waterworks play area is a hit with children, and perfect for family fun and togetherness with more thrilling options for the teens and adults.

Camp Carnival is the kid's program and has a dedicated area on the Upper Deck. Catered to here are those from 2-11 years of age with a range of fun activities, and on the deck below is Circle C for youngsters from 12-14, offering more age-appropriate pastimes like video games, movies, sports and dance parties.

Teens aged 15-17 have a hangout space called O2 on the Sun Deck with a non-alcoholic drinks bar, arcade, dance floor and places to chill.

Child-minding is available on the Carnival Legend in the evenings through the Night Owl program, for kids aged 1-11 years. There is a small hourly charge for this, and it is not in-cabin but in the kids areas.

Seuss at Sea is new to Australia on the Carnival Legend, and offers all kinds of cool experiences for kids from meeting characters to interactive story times. "Hasbro, the Game Show" is also available on the ship and a fun family game show for everyone to participate in together.

I have enjoyed visiting as much of the world as possible over the years. Europe and the Mediterranean are personal favourites, but there is so much to see very close to our little Australasian corner of the globe- one of my top travel experiences was snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles in New Caledonia! Cruising is a fantastic way to see it all, and we hope to make booking a cruise easier for both first-timers and old salts. From ship tips to destination news and views, we will keep you up-to-date. Happy cruising!
