Week Fantastique: Cruise Brisbane to Vanuatu
The Cruise: P&O Cruises
This cruise by P&O Australia is now called the Pacific Island Hopper, and it is a great itinerary which brings together many great aspects of cruising the South Pacific. At seven nights, it is a great length for anyone who wants to try out cruising, or who can not take too much time off- whilst not being too short to enjoy a decent break! Brisbane is closer than other Australian ports to the South Pacific islands, so there is only one sea day on the way out and two on the way back. The ground it covers includes some of the South Pacific's best- ports stops in both New Caledonia and Vanuatu offer friendly towns, French and Melanesian culture, palm trees and beautiful beaches. Princess Cruises, Carnival and Royal Caribbean all offer similar itineraries.
The Ports: South Pacific
The Pacific Island Hopper cruises from Brisbane to Noumea and Lifou, both in New Caledonia, before making the last port stop in Port Vila, Vanuatu and then returning to Brisbane. Noumea s the capital of New Caledonia, a lovely tropical city which blends both its native and colonial histories well. Lifou is a picture-perfect island with a white beach and excellent underwater vistas to be seen with snorkels or scuba diving gear, and Port Vila is a friendly town with a bustling harbour, home to some wonderful handicraft markets.
