We've said it before and we'll say it again - a cruise ship is a great place for a celebration of any kind. Birthdays, weddings, hen parties, Christmas: they are all made fabulous when the occasion is marked at sea. Everything is done for you, all the necessary aspects of a good shindig are right there on board, and it's easy to focus on the revelry at hand.
If you don't have an appropriate celebration to use as an excuse for booking your next cruise, do not despair - each year has one built in. The new year comes about with alarming regularity, but rather than mourn the end of another trip round the sun, plan to welcome the next one with cocktails, poolside loungers, delicious dining and exotic destinations. New Years Eve cruises from Sydney, Brisbane and other Aussie ports are a fantastic way to ring in January.
Get a little bit fancy
I don't know about you, but my last New Year's Eve was spent in a cowshed after our planned bonfire was rained out. As much as I enjoy the company of my bovine friends, it's nice to inject a little glamour into life when you can. New Year's Eve is the perfect reason to get glammed up, with traditional celebrations including all kinds of sparkle - on dresses, in champagne and in the sky.
A cruise ship offers no end of places for a nice night out. Start with a fabulous multi-course meal in the main dining room, perhaps take in a show, and then head to your venue of choice to drink, dance and socialise the night away. Multiple bars mean something for everyone, from nightclubs to a classy cocktail lounges, and you can even go back to your room to perform outfit changes should you wish!
Easy night out
The biggest reason I tend to end up in cowsheds rather than out on the town is laziness. Getting out of the house is achievable, but having to think about sober drivers or taxis, places to park, possible inclement weather and the rest can just be too much. Add cover charges and the prospect of waiting in lines, and the farm animals begin to look much more inviting.
Being on board a mega ship makes it all mercifully easy. There's nothing you can't walk to, and there's no need to even venture outside unless you want to get bit of fresh air and ocean views. You can pop back to the cabin to freshen up rather than deal with grotty public bathrooms, and there's no waiting in line - if a bar is a little too crowded for your liking, just move along to the next one. Best of all, no-one has to drive anywhere, or pay for any rides.
New Year's Eve means party mode, and this is especially evident on a cruise ship where everyone's on holiday! Almost any cruise line you are likely to find yourself on will organise something special to mark the occasion. This might mean complimentary champagne, a big bash on the pool deck, noisemakers to welcome the new year in a melodious manner, lots of live music, or formal dinners to kick off the evening - probably a bit of everything.
Once the festivities are over and you have had a sleep-in, spend January 1st on the beach or by the pool. What a special way to start the new year!
