Cruises from Fremantle: Perth's Port
The chilled out, laidback port town of Fremantle is a great introduction to Australia's west coast. This side of the country is much more remote and sparsely inhabited than the other, and Perth is the only main centre, making Fremantle the region's primary cruise port.
The Port: Docking in Fremantle
Cruises to Fremantle dock at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal, which is located very close to downtown Fremantle, along the waterfront of the Inner Harbour. The terminal holds some important Fremantle history, having been built in the early 1960s to welcome the growing number of immigrants travelling to Perth. It is a heritage-listed building, and for the convenience of cruise passengers it has a cafe, licensed bar, public toilets, and free Wi-Fi. It is wheelchair accessible.
The Town: Fremantle Fun
The relaxed locals refer to Fremantle as Freo, and it is a fun and friendly place to spend a day. There are plenty of cafes and bars where visitors and locals alike enjoy to sit and watch the world go by, and the boats come in and out of the harbour. Freo's waterfront area is a great place to stroll and visit the weekend markets in E-Shed. There are four perfect swimming beaches in and around the town, all of which offer spectacular sunsets over the Indian ocean- these best enjoyed with fresh-caught fish and chips.
History is a high point in Fremantle. The prison was constructed in 1850 and was Western Australia's main maximum security prison, now a world heritage listed building, art gallery and museum. Western Australia's Maritime Museum is located on Freo's Victoria Quay, and holds the seafaring history which shaped the state. Round House on Arthur's Head was Western Australia's first permanent building and now is a small museum. Topping off the historic sites is the opulent Victorian architecture which can be found downtown, including the Fremantle Town Hall.
