Dubai Cruising: Middle East Splendour
Dubai is but one of the United Arab Emirates, an independent city-state which glitters with all things new and modern. Recently nothing more than a trading and fishing town, this pop-up city in the desert offers shopping, partying, fine dining and more to the visitor, and is fast becoming a centre point for cruising in the Middle East.
The Port: Dubai Cruise Terminal
Ships leaving from or arriving to Dubai dock at the Dubai Cruise Terminal, which in keeping with the rest of Dubai's new developments is modern, well kitted out and welcoming to visitors. In the port facility, passengers can exchange currency, buy food and access free internet on terminals in the business centre. There are also duty free shops, a post office and free shuttle buses to Mercato Mall and the city centre.
The City: Dubai Delights
Passengers on cruises leaving or arriving in Dubai are fortunate to have the opportunity to spend a few days pre- or post- cruise exploring the city. The infrastructure and public transport systems make this a simple and enjoyable endeavour! Dubai is a place competing for the fastest, biggest, tallest and all other superlatives, and is an exciting destination for anyone. Visitors should take care, however, to dress and behave modestly in public areas
Downtown Dubai is home to the world's tallest building and the world's largest mall. The former is the Burj Khalifa skyscraper, rising to 829.8 metres. The latter is Dubai Mall, a mega facility attracting a quarter of a million shoppers each week. It houses more than 1,200 retail outlets. Also to be found in the central city is the amazing choreographed Dubai Fountain, even bigger than the dancing fountain of the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
Other districts of Dubai ring the downtown.
Jumeirah is one of these, a very multicultural area which has a gorgeous beach.
Satwa is a district with a strong Filipino and Indian presence, famous for its Gold Souk, a market selling the precious metal. Textiles are another top commodity in Satwa.
History lovers should visit Bur Dubai, home to mosques, old buildings and museums.
