Cruises to Cairns: Tropical Northern Queensland
Cairns is a wonderful cruise destination where Aussies can experience tropical delights without leaving the country. It is a small city which is very popular with international tourists and surrounded by Australia's rainforests. A stopover here can mean shopping in the city, swimming in the swimming lagoon, or taking a shore tour into the Daintree rainforest- plenty to do on this Pacific cruise.
The Port: Cairns Cruise Terminal
Cruises to Cairns dock at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal, a beautifully restored and heritage listed wharf shed which also serves as a function space. There is an information booth which is staffed when ships are in, to make it easy for cruise passengers to find their way. It is only a short walk from the terminal into the Cairns CBD. The biggest ships may not be able to navigate the channel to Cairns Port, so will anchor and use tenders.
The City: Things to Do in Cairns
There is plenty to keep a cruiser occupied for the day in Cairns:
The Regional Gallery and Cairns Museum provide information about the area and local art, and the Botanic Gardens display tropical vegetation and plants used by the Aboriginal peoples of the area.
The Esplanade is the place to be for locals and visitors alike, where all the action happens. It is home to the artificial safe swimming lagoon, free barbecues, walking paths, night markets and plenty of restaurants and cafes.
Adventure sports are prevalent in Cairns, be it skydiving, scuba diving, rainforest safaris, hot air ballooning, white water rafting or hang gliding. Many of these can be experienced with pre-booked shore tours, depending on the cruise line.
Cairns is often seen as a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, which lies just offshore. The underwater sights to see are spectacular- as are the sights of Australia's unique rainforest and outback landscapes inland!
