The Ovation takes to the seas

The enormous and technologically advanced Ovation of the Seas, set to be the biggest cruise ship to ever call Australia home when she spends a season here later this year, has finally entered the water for the final stages of construction.

Just two months remain until the megaship is ready for her inaugural voyage, and ten until she arrives in the South Pacific. Her dry dock in the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany was filled last night, and the Ovation floated out into the River Ems to take the very first steps of her oceangoing career.

Australia's "$1 billion baby"

This ship represents the first ever new build destined specifically for the Asia-Pacific region, and will soon dwarf the buildings of Darling Harbour when she arrives to take her place in Sydney.

Adam Armstrong, regional commercial director for Royal Caribbean, commented "Today marks a truly momentous milestone in the Australian cruise industry: our first ever newbuild now floats on water for the very first time. In just 10 months she will call Sydney home and proudly claim the title of the newest, largest and most technologically advanced cruise ship to ever sail in our waters."

"This is a significant day for both Royal Caribbean and for Australia, as we celebrate the birth of our new $1 billion baby. Ovation of the Seas has been purpose-built for the Asia-Pacific region and continues Royal Caribbean's unique strategy of bringing the very best cruise ships to Australia. We're extremely excited that she is now in the water and look forward to welcoming her to Sydney Harbour."

The ship, which will be the third largest cruise vessel in the world at the time of her launch, will include a range of brand-new features for Aussie cruisers. These include:

  • Dynamic Dining with a range of concept restaurants.
  • Ripcord by iFly, a skydiving simulator.
  • The North Star viewing capsule to take passengers on a ride above the decks.
  • The SeaPlex indoor sports and entertainment complex including bumper cars and a circus school.

I have enjoyed visiting as much of the world as possible over the years. Europe and the Mediterranean are personal favourites, but there is so much to see very close to our little Australasian corner of the globe- one of my top travel experiences was snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles in New Caledonia! Cruising is a fantastic way to see it all, and we hope to make booking a cruise easier for both first-timers and old salts. From ship tips to destination news and views, we will keep you up-to-date. Happy cruising!
