The Melbourne Cup is a highlight of Australia's events calendar, coming around at the beginning of November each year and bringing with it a bevy of fillies, fashion, flutters and everything else that goes along with a great day at the races.
This year, Cruise Sale Finder would like to send one lucky winner and a chosen companion on a Melbourne Cup cruise. Not only will they bask in the exciting atmosphere of race day, but get there the best way possible, with a relaxing cruise on a "Fun Ship" from Sydney over 6 nights.
The cruise prize
Carnival Cruise Lines have been sending ships full of revellers down to the Cup for several years now, perfecting the art of Melbourne Cup Cruises - and it's just such an adventure that our winner will embark upon. The Carnival Spirit's itinerary turns a one-day event into a week-long holiday, leaving Sydney on the 30th of October to spend a sea day travelling to Melbourne, 3 days docked there so passengers can attend the races and another sea day travelling back.
Included in the cruise are transfers to Flemington for the main event and general admission tickets, along with many onboard activities including a degustation dinner, Halloween celebrations, a fashion presentation, a Bloody Mary Brunch and more. What a way to experience this iconic Aussie race!
What do cruise ships and racehorses have in common, besides the fact that they both feature heavily in the cruise mentioned above? We're hoping to find out! To enter the competition to win a Melbourne Cup Cruise on the Carnival Spirit, come up with a great name that could refer to both a noble cruise vessel and a noble racing steed, and post it to the relevant competition post on the Cruise Sale Finder Facebook page.
Both ships and horses tend to have grand-sounding names - think of previous Cup winners Prince of Penzance, Makybe Diva, Might and Power and Empire Rose among others. Ships are often marked with equally impressive and lofty monikers: some favourite vessels on the Australian scene include the Radiance of the Seas, the Carnival Legend, the Pacific Jewel, and the Golden Princess.
There are also the slightly more quirky names for steeds of both the track and of the sea, a valid route to take when considering your entry. Another look at the list of Melbourne Cup champions uncovers such gems as Efficient, Brew, Rogan Josh, Lets Elope and What A Nuisance. Interesting choices, equestrians! Cruise ships don't tend to have names quite as eccentric as these, there are a few which are a little out of the box - the MS Paul Gauguin, named for a French post-impressionist artist, the Star Cruises ships with their flashy names like Superstar Virgo, and the very Dutch designations that grace the Holland America fleet - Noordam, Zaandam, Zuiderdam and more.
Take these naming observations into account when considering your entry, or head down a completely different route. Points will be awarded for originality, creativity, wit, poetic notions, and just whatever takes the fancy of the judges - go crazy and be in to win! Cruises and horses are a great way to holiday.
Note: the giveaway is open to New South Wales residents only and does not include flights to and from Sydney. Find the full terms and conditions here.
