Holland America's ms Koningsdam has launched a new era of cruising for the line.

Holland America Line has long since taken possession of the newest member of their fleet, and the stunning, brand-new MS Koningsdam was blessed in May by Her Majesty Queen Maxima of the Netherlands. Since then, she has sailed in the Mediterranean and Europe, based for the summer in her native homeport of Amsterdam.

MS Koningsdam

Pinnacle Class begins
The MS Koningsdam is the first in the new Pinnacle Class, bigger than the line's other ships but still built to Panamax dimensions, allowing it to explore the world more effectively. Carrying 2,560 guests at full capacity, this newcomer is something unprecedented in the Holland America fleet, but still carries on the many years of tradition, service and nautical heritage so evident across the line.

Orlando Ashford, president of the line, said when taking delivery of the ms Koningsdam: "Today is a day of celebration for the entire Holland America Line family, and a milestone in our company history. We all share in this proud moment as we welcome Koningsdam to our fleet. Koningsdam looks spectacular, beyond our expectations, and we thank all those involved for their dedication and commitment in bringing our vision to life."

What might passengers find onboard this innovative Pinnacle Class ship? Light-filled spaces, a blend of contemporary design and technology and traditional elegance, and an overall beautiful way to travel. Onboard features will include:
  • The iconic HAL culinary arts centre
  • A stunning pool area
  • Fabulous dining rooms and specialty options including the well-established favourite Pinnacle Grill
  • The "Lincoln Centre Stage" live music venue among other musical entertainment
  • Queen's Lounge lecture hall, nightclub and entertainment venue
  • Many places to drink, chat and relax including the refined Explorer's Bar and the Crow's Nest with panoramic windows

Inside the MS Koningsdam

Beginning stages
The Dedication Ceremony took place on the 20th of May in Rotterdam, with a blessing by the Dutch Queen, and Holland America Line took official possession of the ship on the 31st of May, in a signing ceremony at Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard, and the Dutch flag was raised on the ship for the first time. Since these auspicious events, Holland america passengers have been enjoying this wonderful vessel which mixes the traditional elegance for which the line is known with a little modern comfort and style.

I have enjoyed visiting as much of the world as possible over the years. Europe and the Mediterranean are personal favourites, but there is so much to see very close to our little Australasian corner of the globe- one of my top travel experiences was snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles in New Caledonia! Cruising is a fantastic way to see it all, and we hope to make booking a cruise easier for both first-timers and old salts. From ship tips to destination news and views, we will keep you up-to-date. Happy cruising!
